Fun French Foundations ๐Ÿ—๏ธ - Vital French

Bonjour , 👋

Voulez-vous parler un peu de français?

French: Alphabet, Pronunciation, Genders, Greetings, Numbers, Dates, Days of the week & Telling the time. 🕰️

Alphabet 🔤

Do you know your French A, B, Cs?

Err, yes, if I stop at C.

Why bother? Err... to spell out your name and your email address of course but more importantly to improve your French accent.

Pronunciation 👄

Having an English accent is sexy but if you're not being understood it will become frustrating for you. I know some sounds aren't easy and you feel a fool making a sound like you've got a hairball in your throat but if it means you'll get what you ordered in the café - personally, I think it's worth practising and just so you know, it's possible.

Nouns

Je sais (I know)! The masculine/feminine thing is un cauchemar (a nightmare). But with a few silly stories and by adding accessories onto items the genders will settle cosily into your memory. Let your imagination run wild! 💭

Greetings Earthling 👽  Good manners in French

Want to know a bit more than bonjour & au revoir? In this section I'll help you mind your Ps & Qs in French, apologise profusely for treading on someone's toe and make a bit of small talk. Meet, greet, apologise, make friends French style - things that the French do that you probably don't.

Numbers - un, deux, trois...🔢

You may love French numbers or they may scare le pantalon (the pants/trousers) off you but let's face it - there's a reason counting is one of the first things we learn when we're knee high to a grasshopper (or the French would say haut comme trois pommes - as high as 3 apples). 🍎

The way I teach numbers is fun. You'll really enjoy the daft associations and visual clues.

Dates, Months, Days, Telling the time 📅

Once you have your French numbers dans le sac (in the bag) you can move on to saying years, dates, your birthday, your date of birth the year you last visited France or what day is it anyway?!

Then telling the time so you can avoid missing your train, dinner reservation or rendezvous.

Sing sing sing 🎤

There are some French songs to listen to - a great way to learn a language. Songs tend to stay firmly planted in your memory.

This course is fun and practical. Whether you're a beginner or a bit rusty you will reap the rewards the next time you're in France.

  • 'I love this course. I love her energy and she is able to be so clear as well. I feel like I am having fun while learning for sure.' Tammie
  • 'It’s NOT boring!' Douglas
  • 'I'm trying to re-learn french 40 years after doing my O level exam, having done no french at all since. This foundation course has been perfect as a starting point, dredging my distant memories and re-gaining some fluency. Cecile is an excellent teacher, she's great fun, and I look forward to making further progress with her other courses.' Tracy

Full-disclosure - French people will think you speak fluently after this course so be prepared for them to babble away at you!

Hope to see you à l'intérieur (on the inside)!

Your daft, passionate, bi-lingual French teacher,

CécileBB :-)

French Pronunciation - Powerful tricks to get a good French accent ๐Ÿ‘„

Bonjour ,

Let le fun commencer!

Having an English accent when you speak in French may have the French swooning at your feet but if you want to get what you actually ordered at the restaurant then let's make sure your accent is comprehensible!

In La prononciation Part 1, you'll be:

  • Watching frolicking lambs playing a little too near a BBQ
  • Throwing your weight on the end of French words
  • Spitting like a llama
  • Getting to grips with French vowels
  • Finding out why the French scribble on their letters with accent marks like - à, ç, é, è, ê, ï, ù...
  • Deciding whether 'To pronounce or not to pronounce (ça c'est la question!)'
  • Bringing up hairballs with the French 'r'
  • Saying 's' like you've had too much to drink
  • Learning the letter combos that give you good abs!
  • And other fun pronunciation tips to improve your French accent.

You may not know but French pronunciation is easier to learn than it is for foreign people to learn English pronunciation. English is all over the place with more exceptions than you could shake a stick at!

Allons-y! Let's go!

CécileBB :-)

P.S. A full PDF summary of those sexy French sounds is provided in the next lesson.

French Pronunciation Part 2 ๐Ÿ‘„ ๐Ÿ‘„

Bonjour ,

In the last lesson we delved into some powerful pronunciation tips to help you with your French accent. In this lesson we are continuing with that. We will look at more combinations of letters and the sounds you need to have coming out of your mouth when you say them!

Pucker up now!

C'est parti!

Nouns, Nouns and More Nouns! โ™‚๏ธ โ™€๏ธ

Bonjour ,

French nouns - sooooo exciting I know!

Nouns are a fancy word for names. That's all nouns are, names for things, people, places, animals, concepts & other stuff. e.g. a table, John, Paris, a dog, a thought & psychology.

Vocabulary is probably one of the easier things to grasp when learning  a foreign language. But then most languages go and spoil everything by giving everything a gender!

Noooooooooooooooooo!

Gender issues

What is this masculine ♂️/feminine ♀️all about?

Are all dogs, boys and all tables, girls in French? Eh? What?

By the end of this lesson you'll feel more of a ouiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii coming on.

What will you learn?

You'll learn:

  • How to say 'the', 'a/an' 'some'
  • Really fun ways of remembering the gender of nouns (including dressing up bottles in skirts and imagining a moustache on a glass!)
  • How to make plurals (more than one of something)
  • And other useful stuff to help you speak a bit of le French

Super (said in a French accent)!

C'est parti - Let's get going!

CécileBB :-)

Greetings! ๐Ÿ‘‹

Bonjour ,

Meeting and greeting in French.

Want to be able to say hello, goodbye, please, thank you and goodbye in French?

It's what you need if you want to show a few manners.

And what if you stand on someone's toe! Learn how to apologise and enquire how someone is.

If they forgive you you can strike up a conversation with them.

'Where are you from?' That sort of thing.

Without further ado...

CécileBB

French Numbers, Dates & Telling the Time ๐Ÿ•ฐ

Bonjour ,

If you've ever done numbers in French then you may remember them being a bit tricky - well from number 69 onwards anyway.

It's true - they're a bit daft after 69 - but in this lesson you'll get some funny ways to remember those pesky numbers and plenty of practice.

Plus you'll learn to count to infinity in French! Great if you can't get to sleep.

I'm not even kidding.

Once you can count to 100 and you know the number 1000 you're laughing...or sleeping.

Let's get a-counting and do a bit of maths in French too!

You'll also learn how to say dates so you can give your date of Birth.

Then you'll do:

  • Months of the year
  • Days of the week
  • Telling le time

Allons-y! Let's get going!
