Get Beyond Tarzan 2 - Fun Holiday French with CécileBB 🍺 🍦 ☀️ 🏕️ ⛱️ ✈️ ⛰️ 🌊 🏛️

Bonjour !

Well you covered a lot of 🏃🏾‍♀️ ground in the first 'Get Beyond Tarzan Level 1 - Fun Holiday French for Adults' course - that's a mouthful!

I hope you're ready to put your running shoes 👟 on because this follow-up course is going to cover some rocky French language terrain.🧗‍♀️ Be prepared because it's going to push you to cover ground which you may never have encountered before - into unknown territories.

If you're new to French you may have to go at the pace of une tortue 🐢  through the lessons - repeat them and go slowly. If you've done quite a bit of French before and you need a refresher you can go at the pace of un lièvre 🐇 .

You'll revise all the main tenses and moods within everyday conversational French. This course packs a punch in terms of content. 👊

‘Cécile’s course is brilliant. Having studied French before, I came to the course confident in some areas but very aware of my areas of weakness and eager to improve. On the learning platform, there is access to a sequence of teaching videos which can be listened to and paused. It has really helped to be able to access these videos at any time in order to focus on those areas that I know I need to work on. The content can be accessed in either a video format or as audio. I love being able to have the audio content as well as the videos as I enjoy listening whilst walking. Cécile is constantly updating the learning platform with new content including songs and cultural information which brings the learning to life. I am amazed at the breadth of my learning; it has been much wider than I had anticipated when I signed up. I have learned and grown in confidence in aspects of French grammar that I didn’t even realise existed! Cécile incorporates information about French culture, customs and colloquial language. As a result, I have been inspired to delve deeper outside of the lessons by watching French series’ and reading in French. Seeing all that I’ve been learning with Cécile in ‘real life’ has been deeply satisfying. I would highly recommend Cécile’s course to anyone who is interested in improving their current level of French. The lessons build on the grammar learned previously but with new, fresh content meaning you are both supported and challenged.’ Hannah Clifford

What you get:

  • Over 15 hours of video in total (you can revisit them as often as you need to) 📹
  • Audio MP3 versions of the videos so you can listen on the go 🎧  🚗  🏋️
  • Written summaries (you don't even have to lift a pen if you don't want to) 📄
  • Practice questions with the answers (to see what you've remembered and where the gaps are) ✍🏾
  • French songs (with lyrics and translations - powerful way to learn) 🎶

What you'll cover in this course - both the practical stuff and la grammaire.

🍹 You'll order your favourite tipple and some classic French drinks from le bar -  🍺  beer with mint 🌱  cordial anyone? The fancy pants👖 grammar is 'the comparative' where you'll compare the noise levels of this bar compared to that bar ('Turn it down - we can't hear ourselves think in here!'). And you'll focus on the pronunciation of -ill. Might make you feel ill! 🤢

👪  You'll introduce your family and friends. We say 'grandchildren' and the French say 'little children!' Petits-enfants. The fancy pants👖 grammar is 'the conditional mood' ('would' in English) e.g. 'I would like' and possessive adjectives (my, your, his, her, our, their + noun) my mother, your brother, his aunt, their grandchildren etc.

🍨 If like moi you're a big ice cream fan (je suis fan de glaces!) you'll enjoy learning to order ice creams the French way. Pick your favourite flavours (called parfums in French!), from chocolate chip 🍪  to dark chocolate 🍫 , 🍒  cherry, strawberry 🍓 and nutty flavours like 🌰  chestnut. In terms of fancy pants👖 grammar you'll know the difference between an aspirated 'h' and a 'mute' one (bet you can't wait!) and you'll concentrate your prononciation on French words ending in -et like sorbet

Do you find yourself resorting to talking about the weather ☀️ ⛈️ ☂️  when you'd like to chat to someone but your mind goes blank 😵  - suddenly all the knowledge you've accumulated since your birth has disappeared - poof 💨 - nope - can't think of anything to talk about. The weather is a popular topic in most countries so you'll be well equipped to make small talk in French after this lesson. They'll be plenty of fancy pants👖 grammar where you'll practise using the snooty impersonal il the one that doesn't mean 'he'; 🌧️  il pleut, ☃️  il neige, il fait beau ⛱️  etc. and you'll use the weather in different tenses (past & present). All while learning about different regions in France, the seasons and some funny French weather expressions. Il pleut comme vache qui pisse! 🐄  🌧️

Get out your 🐟  sardines the slang for tent pegs in French - you're going camping 🏕️ . You'll look for a campsite with the amenities you desire, book your pitch, your camper van space or some quirky accommodation for a spot of glamping. Fancy👖  pants grammar-wise you'll be digging ⛏️ deeper into the conditional and some really fancy 'conditional perfect' - in English this is 'would've'. ''I would've preferred my mobile-home interior in blue!' 🔵

French markets some of the best! They're still going strong which is because good food is an obsession in France. Buy your 🍈  🍇  🍉  fruit & veg 🥦  🍆  by the number or by the kilo. the Put on your grammatical👖  pants with pronouns and especially the shortest (maybe not the sweetest to learn) pronoun y. So short it squeaks to let you know it's there. Plus you'll practice the imperfect - (the continuous past tense) with the help of Mlle Zen. 🧘🏾‍♀️

🧀  Like cheese? Well you'll be shopping for some French classics in une fromagerie - cheese mongers. You'll be amazed how much French you can learn just buying and enquiring about French cheese! You'll be shopping in style - wear your feather boa because you're going to mingle with some VIP verbs (the ones that take être as their auxiliary verb in the perfect tenses). Some of these VIP verbs lead a double life as 👢 👢 GoGo dancers. This cheesy lesson will answer a lot of questions you may have got stuck with in the past. For you grammarphiles - we're talking transitive v intransitive verbs. Plus how to say this or that cheese (Louise) and this or that one. How to say whenever, whoever, wherever, whatever, however & whichever. How to say 'only' using ne & que and look at common cognates (words that look and mean the same in French and English).

Tripping over on your way out of the fromagerie 🧀 will mean you need to be able to describe your 🤕  injuries in French. Talking about aches and pains is another popular topic of conversation along with the weather. So whether you're speaking to someone medical, your nearest and dearest or just listening to that French couple having a conversation you'll be fully versed in body parts and how to say 'ow' in French. Grammar-pants-wise👖 a bit of past infinitive, e.g. 'Thank you for helping off the pavement.' and the many facets of avant

If you find yourself at the 👩‍⚕️ doctors or at a hospital 🏥  you'll be able to explain your symptoms, cold, runny nose, sneezing, coughing - you really feel grotty! You'll wrap your lips around the -ouil/ouille sound which can need some repetition to get to grips with.

To help you recover you'll learn the lingo you may need à la pharmacie 💊  - medicine and how to take it, prescriptions 📜 , health insurance etc. Then you might actually need some medication to get through the lesson because you'll do indirect object pronouns. The fancy pants👖 name is enough to make you feel like you need a lie 🛌🏾  down. But knowing them cracks open a big understanding egg 🐣 . The Chuckle Brother 🤣  😂  duo will help you with how to learn these. It'll be a laugh a minute! 🤡

Finally, you'll finish en grande pompe au Palais de Versailles built under the famous monarch 👑  Louis XIV. With the help of Madame Claire Voyance you'll learn the simple 🔮  future tense (all about what will happen) and the future perfect (all about what will have happened). Get your Tardis on standby because you'll be bouncing from the 🕰️  past to the 🎁  present to the 🔮 future which happens when we have normal everyday conversations.

Et voilà - this course is absolutely 💯 % not for the faint-hearted. Only do this course if you're strong like bull 🐂..

The first Get Beyond Tarzan Level course will get you by in French if that's your goal. This second course covers all the tenses and moods except the subjunctive which frustratingly I couldn't squeeze in. I will have it there in the next one though.

This course will push you, 🙇  test you & challenge you 😰. If your goal is to actually converse in French with real live French speaking people than at the end you will be well-equipped to do so 💪🏿 . You will learn some real fancy French - it is difficult but you can do it without it feeling like a chore because I'll be there guiding you and keeping you entertained. Hard things don't have to be boring to learn!

You'll have the material to go over as and when you want to. Every time you go back through the lessons a bit more will stick to your memory 🍯 . That is how knowledge is accumulated. Keep stacking those French bricks and going back to fill in the gaps. You'll end up with a house 🏠 - maybe a bit ramshackle compared to native speakers' places but it will do the job!

If you're ready to learn enough French to make a bit of small talk, order what you want and show off a bit come and join me for this mad but massively rewarding journey 🚵  that is learning a foreign language. You'll be so glad you did. 🙌🏾

16 Au Bar 🍺

Bonjour ,

Clearly you know common drinks brands. So in this lesson you'll learn about the drinks that are typically French.

Yes, you can put a mint 🌱 cordial sirop à la menthe in your bière 🍺 and no one would bat an eyelid in France. It's even got a name Une Valse - A Waltz! That would certainly make me spin...quickly towards les toilettes!

As well as ordering dodgy French concoctions you'll be whinging about the loud music 🎶 and comparing one bar to another.

Bonjour ,

Au marché cette fois-ci you'll be perfectly imperfect!

You've been learning the present perfect & now you're going to learn another way of expressing the past called the imperfect.

Never will imperfection have seemed so useful. If bedhead can make you look good - learning the imperfect can make you sound good in French - and it will!

With plenty of daft associations to help you remember how to use this past tense you'll be strutting your French stuff la prochaine fois en France! 🇫🇷

French people - lemme at 'em!

Youpiiii!

CécileBB :-)

25 À la Fromagerie (Part 1) 🧀

Bonjour ,

Miam miam le fromage... 🧀

Il y a une expression en français,

'Être triste comme un repas sans fromage.' 😟

'To be as sad as a meal without cheese.' 😟

Vous aimez le fromage?

Moi, je l'adore! ❤️ 'C'est trop bon' 😋 - comme disent les jeunes!

Dans ce cours on va braire comme un âne. In this lesson we're going to bray like a donkey.

You've practised the y donkey head pronoun (meaning 'there/it') now you'll meet the donkey's backside pronoun en - y en!

You're going to be formally introduced to the main VIP verbs that have être as their auxiliary in the present perfect. They'll try to intimidate you but after this lesson you'll be high fiving them! ✋They just want to be understood - like everyone else.

And by the end you'll be listening to some fancy French and if you've been listening to the lessons a few times recently you will understand nearly all of it - exciting!!!! 🥂

Allons-y, c'est parti...

CécileBB :-)

26 À la Fromagerie (Part 2) 🧀 🧀

Bonjour ,

We've upped the ante in the lessons - if you feel like you're a beginner again - fear not. It's a normal feeling when things get harder.

Some bits of a journey are harder than others. You might need more rests. You can divide the journey into manageable chunks. Go for 10 minutes at time.

You can even choose to not go on the journey and come back to it when you feel ready. No pressure.

Cheese is big in France - There's some top notch cheese where a lot of love and attention that has gone into making it.

Learn a bit about le fromage 🧀 all while learning a lot of French in context.

By the end of this lesson you'll be more familiar with:

  • Cliquey VIP Verbs
  • Fidgety Intransitive v Showy Transitive Verbs
  • Pronominal Verbs who can't stop looking in the mirror
  • Demonstrative Adjectives/Pronouns - get your pointing stick out
  • Comedy French Cognates - speak English with a French accent

Doesn't sound sexy but once you've wrapped your lips around it your French will sound sexier! And you'll be on the way to understanding more French.

Keep going - even when the terrain is tricky...

You probably don't believe me but more is going in than you realise.

CécileBB :-)

27 Aïe - Ouille - J'ai Mal! 🤕

The lesson starts with useful ways of expressing what happened in the past after or before something else happened - the fancy term is the Past Infinitive - bet you can't wait to find out what that is!

Donc, allons-y so that you can be out of your misery and into la joie française!

CécileBB :-)

28 À l'Hôpital 🏥 🚑 🤒

Coucou ,

On va aller à l'hôpital mais ne vous inquiétez pas ce n'est rien de grave.

We're going to the hospital but don't worry it's nothing serious.

Vous allez expliquer vos symptômes au médecin en expliquant où vous avez mal et qu'est-ce qui vous fait mal.

You're going to explain your symptoms to the doctor by explaining where you have pain and what is causing you pain.

Et puis au lit pour vous reposer jusqu'à ce que la douleur passe.

And then to bed to rest until the pain passes.

CécileBB :-)

29 À la Pharmacie ⚕️ ⚗️ 💊

Bonjour ,

Allons à la pharmacie pour chercher des remèdes pour nos douleurs.

Let's go to the pharmacy to get some remedies for our aches and pains.

You'll ask for rapid relief and learn how to understand the directions for taking certain medicines - with food, on an empty stomach even up the bum with a suppository! The French love a suppository!

You'll also meet a new set of pronouns that will have you chuckling 🤣 all the way to Paris!

CécileBB :-)

30 Visite à Versailles 🏰 🔮 👑

Bonjour  ,

Today you will be going to the palace of Versailles or at least you'll try to visit it. In this final lesson of Get Beyond Tarzan Level Course 2 - you will be mixing and matching different tenses and moods which is what happens in everyday speech.

While trying to organise your trip to Versailles you'll be swapping between the present tense, the imperative mood, the present perfect (past tense), the conditional mood and you'll meet Madame Claire Voyance who will help you to understand the future tense and the future perfect tense!

No time to dilly dally - let's get a-waltzin' through time and mood...

Revision: The Mods 🛵 (Modal Verbs) & The Rockers 🏍️ (Auxiliary Verbs) with Cuckoos 🐦 🐦 (Pronouns)

The Mods 🛵  (Modal Verbs) & The Rockers 🏍️  (Auxiliary Verbs) with Cuckoos 🐦 🐦  (Pronouns)

The Mods & Rockers were rival gangs mainly from south of England in 1960s. The Mods tended to ride mopeds and wore suits – The Rockers tended to ride motorbikes and wore leathers.

We're going to use these battling gangs to help us with word order in French - Merci les gars! Thanks guys!

Word order is often different in French & English - here we'll get plenty of fun practice to make it feel more natural rather than alien! 👽

Merci,

CécileBB :-)
